Should I Be Using Water- or Oil-Based paint?
Water-based (latex) paint – most common choice
Low odour, quick drying
Easy soap & water cleanup
Great for walls, ceilings, and most interiors
Oil-based paint – for durability & finish
Harder, more durable finish
Better for trim, doors, cabinets, metal
Slower drying, stronger smell, needs solvents to clean
Key rule:
Water over water = OK
Oil over oil = OK
Switching (oil ↔ water) = use a primer first
Simple recommendation:
Use water-based for most jobs
Use oil-based when you need extra toughness or a smoother finish
